This morning, at the conclusion of their annual meeting in the Royal Scots College Salamanca, Bishop Hugh Gilbert, Bishop of Aberdeen and President of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, presided at a Requiem Mass with the other Scottish Bishops, to pray for the repose of the soul of Queen Elizabeth. In his homily Bishop Gilbert highlighted the virtue of stability that Queen Elizabeth brought to the nation and to so many people- she was always a consoling and encouraging presence. In his lifetime, Bishop Gilbert mentioned there had been seven Popes but only one Queen, an enduring presence. It was fitting that the passing of the Queen occurred on the 8th September, the Feast of the Birthday of the Virgin Mary, as Bishop Gilbert commended the Queen Elizabeth to the intercession of the Queen of Heaven with the intoning of the Salve Regina- Hail Holy Queen Mother of mercy Hail our life, our sweetness and our Hope.
