The Bishop and the whole Diocesan Community gives thanks for the work of the Religious Sisters of Charity in founding St Andrew’s Hospice in Airdrie and the outstanding love and commitment they gave to whose they cared for. It is necessary now for them to pass on the full control of St Andrew’s to the Board of Directors, whom the Diocese will continue to support in providing such a necessary service to the people of Lanarkshire. We pray for God’s continued blessing on St Andrew’s, and on the Sisters who have given their lives to serving the sick and dying at the Hospice.

The Religious Sisters of Charity (RSC) is pleased to confirm that it has transferred the
governance of St Andrew’s Hospice, Airdrie to its current Board of Trustees who will continue
to provide specialist palliative care and treatment for those living with life-limiting illnesses.
Our journey in Airdrie began in 1957 with the establishment of Assumption House, which laid the groundwork for the hospice’s foundation in April 1986. More than 50 Sisters have spent several decades serving in Ministries in Airdrie and at St. Andrew’s Hospice, offering compassionate care and comfort to countless patients and their families and continue to be a pastoral presence at St Andrews.
Recognising the evolving needs of the community, the Congregation has made the decision to entrust aspects of our mission to others, ensuring its sustainability for future generations. As part of this process, the transfer was completed on December 19, 2024.
Sr. Patricia Lenihan, Congregational Leader of the Religious Sisters of Charity, reaffirmed the
Congregation’s dedication to the legacy of St. Andrew’s Hospice as it transitions to the
leadership of the Board of Trustees:

Guided by our mission of compassionate care, we have always placed the needs of patients and their families at the heart of our work. We are confident that the high standards of care and support at St. Andrew’s Hospice will continue to flourish under the dedicated leadership of
the Board of Trustees.
“On behalf of the Congregation, I offer my heartfelt thanks to the current Board of Directors, staff, past Directors, Bishops, Clergy, and the many volunteers—past and present—who have collaborated with us in fulfilling our mission. We are particularly grateful to the local community for their unwavering support and to the Sisters who devoted themselves to this important work. The Sisters will always cherish their connection to St. Andrew’s and remain
deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve the Lanarkshire community for nearly 40 years”.
